ECO-DRIVING TIPS
Are you doing your bit?
The following tips make good advice for any driver in any car .. How green are your driving habits?
1
Having the air-conditioning system switched on can increase fuel consumption by 10-14%
2
Remove roof-racks and bike-racks if not in use. They create drag and increase fuel consumption. For the same reason, don’t have windows open at speeds over 40 mph.
3
Correct tyre pressures are important. Under-inflated tyres have higher rolling resistance and increase fuel consumption.
4
Dealers of new cars are required to display a ‘fuel label’, which gives an energy efficiency rating and the running costs that an owner can expect over a year. Check your car’s green credentials.
5
Avoid harsh acceleration and heavy braking. Pulling away too fast uses up 60% more fuel.
6
Changing gear at a modest engine speed - between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm - can reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%.
7
Drive off immediately when starting from cold - idling to heat the engine wastes fuel and causes rapid engine wear.
8
Stick to speed limits and make your fuel go further - driving at 70 mph uses up to 30% more fuel than at 50 mph. Driving at 70 mph along a motorway instead of 80 mph can save something like 40%.
9
Avoid short journeys - a cold engine uses almost twice as much fuel and catalytic converters can take five miles to become effective.
10
Stuck in a jam? Switch off. Turning off the engine after two minutes will save fuel and cut all emissions.
