Advanced Motorists use the driving ‘system’ acronym:
IPSGA
wp9df967b8.png
The Two Second Rule - the marked chevrons on an increasing number of motorways set a good example of this rule.

·
Look ahead at the vehicle ahead of you, then, as that vehicle crosses a chevron point, at a steady speaking voice, say; “Only a fool breaks the two second rule.”
·
If you reach that same chevron point before you get to the end of the sentence - you are too close to the vehicle ahead.
·
Try easing off the accelerator, giving you and your passengers a better safety margin. Remember - check your mirrors - other road users may have other plans.
·
If other road users encroach into your safety space, as an advanced driver, you will have already planned your next course of action to avoid the new hazard.
INFORMATION
Look all around you, using your mirrors to study the situation behind, to the side and ahead of you. Use these observations to plan how to deal with any hazard(s). Give a signal if it will benefit other road users. Use your indicators in the main, but also consider using the Highway Code arm signals and/or the vehicles’ horn as necessary.
POSITION
Check your mirrors and, after giving an appropriate signal (if required), if it is safe to do so, take up the correct position on the road. Use your mirrors whilst carrying out any manoeuvres.
SPEED
Adjust your speed to the correct level for the hazard(s), by using your brakes or engine braking. Use your acceleration sense as necessary. Use your mirrors whilst carrying out any manoeuvres.
GEAR
Once moving at the correct speed for the conditions, select the correct gear and make progress where it is safe to do so. Use your mirrors whilst carrying out any manoeuvres.
A CCELERATION
Once on a safe course after any hazard, accelerate to a suitable and safe speed for the current road conditions. Where safe to do so, it is encouraged to make progress up to the speed limit for that road. Use your mirrors whilst carrying out any manoeuvres.
